A Lifetime in Safety
Join us for an insightful breakfast gathering on Thursday 27th October, to celebrate the exceptional professional achievements of our respected colleague, Ciaran MacCaron.
At the recent SIA National Safety Convention, Ciaran was awarded the SIA Lifetime Achievement Award. This prestigious award celebrates OHS practitioners or professionals who have made an outstanding lifetime contribution to the practice of Occupational Health and Safety in Australian workplaces – with a health and safety career spanning more than three decades, Ciaran was an obvious candidate.
Ciaran’s illustrious career is truly exemplary: from humble beginnings, working as a safety officer in Perth, to his pursuit of advanced professional qualifications, and his numerous high-level international appointments in the construction, mining, and oil & gas sectors. Many of the investigations initiated by Ciaran went on to become important cases in Australian safety common law.
At A Lifetime in Safety, Ciaran will discuss the changes he has experienced over the course of his career, with special emphasis on his time in Fatalities and Special Investigations, a time that inspired his decision to undertake his Doctorate in Confined Space.

Your Speaker
Ciaran MacCarron
Safety Specialist, MacCarron & Associates
Ciaran MacCarron commenced his health and safety career as an unqualified site safety officer for major works being undertaken and managed by a geotechnical company based in Perth. In the over 35 years since then, he has progressively gained qualifications in health and safety at the levels of certificate, associate diploma, graduate diploma, Masters and Ph.D.
From a qualifications perspective, Ciaran was a shining example of continuing education and professional development long before those concepts became the norm in industry.
He has worked on a wide range of industry sites (construction, mining, and oil & gas) in Australia, Mongolia, Indonesia and Egypt, and in Government (Special Investigator and Acting Chief Inspector of Fatalities), where his knowledge and understanding of health and safety matters, and his pragmatic approach to encouraging the highest of safety standards has been inspirational to those of us who have worked with him.
Numerous investigations (and subsequent prosecutions) initiated and managed by Ciaran have been important cases in Australian safety common law, and his Ph.D. thesis on confined space fatalities likewise has had major implications for the re-thinking of confined spaces procedures.
Ciaran is an outstanding and a long-standing safety professional who has been making influential contributions to both specialist and generalist areas of safety for well over 30 years, and his work has had major influences on OHS outcomes in Australian OHS law and directly in Australian workplaces.
