The Ageing Workforce and WHS – Preparing for the Future

The Safety Institute of Australia would like to invite you to the Ageing Workforce event held on Wednesday 9th November 2016.

There has been much said about Australia’s ageing population. One of the key discussion points around this topic is whether having a mature workforce is an opportunity or a threat? Or at the least, what are the implications for health and safety professionals?

Many employers believe that an ageing (mature) workforce will have a large impact on their organisations, and most have not started to fully evaluate the opportunities and risks. There  are economic and social arguments for the need to keep mature workers in the labour force for longer, and employers are becoming more strategic in their approach to ensure opportunities and risks are well understood and managed.

The aim of this seminar is to:

  • Share insight and knowledge about the current state of play with regards to the impacts of a mature workforce on productivity, wellbeing and WHS outcomes
  • Share and promote strategic management practices associated with the management of a mature workforce from a WHS and workforce management perspective
  • Provide a forum to discuss and foster ideas and good management practices associated with the mature workforce and the WHS industry

9:10am The Mature Workforce and WHS – An opportunity or a threat? Presented by Julie Hill, Strategic and Compensation Policy, Director Legal and Strategic Policy Branch – Safe Work Australia
It is well known the mature workforce is having an impact on work health & safety but to what extent is largely unknown. This presentation is aimed at providing an overview of the links associated with the mature workforce and work health & safety. Further, national workers’ compensation statistics and associated WHS relevant trends will be discussed. The session also outlines important threats and opportunities facing organisations associated with the ageing population.

10:30am – WHS Management preparedness and the mature workforce – How to prepare? Presented by Mario Machado, Director – EHS Strategic Solutions Pty Ltd
Whilst the issues associated with the ageing workforce are becoming well understood, the solutions available to organisations are not. The biggest challenge for many organisations is determining the risks and opportunities associated with the ageing workforce and work health & safety and then determining which ‘levers’ offer the most appropriate solutions. This presentation outlines how organisations can assess the current impact of the ageing workforce on work health & safety and what strategic options are available to ensure the risks are well managed and the opportunities ageing with mature workers are fully realised.

11:00am – Workforce management – Understanding mature workers and best practice models – Presented by Wayne Bishop, Director, Activetics Pty Ltd
The needs of mature workers are not well understood by organisations and often workers themselves have not considered the options available to them associated with work and life. This presentation outlines workforce management strategies that should be considered by employers when dealing with mature workers and effective solutions to challenges driven by an ageing workforce.
